What can you expect at the first dental visit?
The infant oral health exam, at age one, provides valuable information about how to take care of your baby’s teeth, how to keep them healthy and cavity free, and how to assess normal dental development. At this first visit, we will perform an exam to evaluate your child’s dental growth and development. We will complete a cleaning and topical fluoride, as individually needed. We will also review proper brushing and flossing instructions, as well as, bottle/Sippy cup use, oral habits and nutrition.
The most effective and comfortable position for patient, parent, and dentist is the knee-to-knee position. One of our Doctors and the parent sit opposite each other with knees touching. The child sits on the parents lap facing the parent with their legs embracing them. The child then lies backward until the head rests in the doctors lap while the parent holds the patients hands. This position allows the child to see and feel the parent while the dentist performs the examination with minimal restraint. The position allows for excellent visualization of the oral cavity by both the parent and the doctor.
